In 2018, during our Sunray Peacekeeper Teachings, we were taught Sacred Geometry of the numbers one through ten, as a path to personal development in ancient philosophical teachings. One is connection with self, with Creator, two is relation with other, three is family, and so on, gradually building relationship connections with the web of life. These numbers are found in forms throughout nature.

I wanted to explore these teachings by making a series of drawings and paintings about the numbers one through ten, using natural objects as my subjects. Each piece is quite different—each subject calling for a different approach best suited to its nature.

“One – Eclipse” is very spare, using first colors, black and white, drawn with black fine line permanent marker, aligned to its spirit as the place of beginning. The second piece, “Two – Mysterious Seed”, was inspired by a tiny deep brown-black heart-shaped seed I found on my front doorstep. I’d never seen one like it before, though I’ve lived here many years. At that time I was taking a Black and White Film Photography course. I developed my photograph of the seed, then ran it through a sepia tone process. I digitized the image, printed it on cotton rag, and drew over it to achieve the deep rich brown undertones, with many shades of brown, sepia, tuscan red, black fine line permanent marker and colored pencil, including black – the barest color just beginning to emerge in a seed, from a black and white world of origin. To me, the seed’s heart shape revealed a theme of “two but not two”, we two together.

In “Three – Wood Sorell”, I wanted to explore saturated color. I chose this plant with three heart-shaped leaves, in spring, carrying forward the theme of heart, and of color coming alive from winter. Each new piece offers new pattern opportunities for exploring relationship. My most recent piece, “Five – As Above So Below” was inspired by a prompt in one of our graduate workshops on the Cosmos. We were shown an image of the beautiful Five-Petalled Orbit of Venus, which reminded me of a spiraling cactus. I created a digital photomontage printed on cotton rag paper, painting pearlescent water color, gouache and gel pen on top. This piece has a translucent quality, vast and intimate all at once, encompassing the night sky and the world of a small plant on Earth’s surface in the same moment.
